Nearly 60% of Buyers Would Rather Talk to an AI Agent Than a Human Sales Rep

I came across a statistic recently that stopped me cold.

Nearly 60% of buyers prefer to engage with an AI sales agent rather than a human — especially in the early stages of the buying process.

That’s not a made-up number. That’s from Conversica’s 2025 AI & Customer Experience Market Report, Real data. Real buyers.

My gut said: that can’t be right.

Then I started thinking about it properly. And honestly? It makes complete sense.

Context Is Everything

Before you dismiss this, you need to understand what type of enquiry we’re talking about.

Not every purchase is a six-month enterprise deal with a steering committee and a legal review. Most aren’t.

The spectrum looks something like this:

  • Complex, high-value: Long sales cycle, multiple stakeholders, big consequences. You want a senior human in that conversation. No question.
  • Simple, transactional: I know what I need, I just need a price, a quote, a stock check, a delivery timeframe. And I need an answer now.

That second category? That’s where nearly 60% of buyers are saying: give me the machine.

And when you break it down, the reason is obvious.

Why Would Anyone Prefer AI?

Because the alternative — the human sales rep — has let us down. Repeatedly.

We’re sick of being on hold. We’re sick of being told “I’ll email that through” and never hearing back. We’re sick of being told one thing by one person, then told something completely different by their colleague the next day. We’re sick of something that should take three minutes taking three days.

And here’s one that doesn’t get talked about enough: we’re sick of being sold to before we even know if the product is right for us.

As a buyer, the first thing I want to know is simple: is this a good fit for me? Does your solution actually solve my problem? Am I wasting my time here?

A human sales rep has a target. They have quota pressure. Their job is to close you. So instead of genuinely helping you work out whether this is the right solution, they’re steering you toward a yes before you’ve had the chance to think.

Buyers know this. They feel it. And they don’t like it.

A well-built AI Sales Agent does the opposite. It qualifies honestly. It asks the right questions, gives you straight answers, and helps you work out whether there’s a genuine fit — fast. No agenda. No pressure. No spin.

For a buyer, that is genuinely refreshing.

The bar set by most sales teams isn’t high. In many cases, it’s barely off the ground.

So when a buyer asks: “Would you rather deal with an inconsistent, slow, agenda-driven human — or a fast, accurate, always-on machine that actually helps me decide?” — the answer starts to make a lot more sense.

Our Lives Have Changed. Sales Hasn’t.

There’s another reason this shift is happening, and it’s got nothing to do with the quality of your sales reps.

We don’t live 9 to 5 anymore.

I’m working at 6am. I’d love to get a quote at 6am. I’d love to get an answer at 6am. Not a promise of a call-back when the office opens.

I work weekends. I had to take a Friday off, so I’m making up for it on Sunday. And on Sunday afternoon, when I’m trying to get information and I need to make a decision — I don’t want to wait until Monday.

Our attention spans have shrunk. We’re used to instant. Amazon delivers overnight. Google answers in a second. Uber shows up in four minutes.

Then we call a supplier and get put on hold for eight minutes, transferred twice, and told someone will get back to us.

The buyers who prefer AI aren’t anti-human. They’re pro-speed. Pro-accuracy. Pro-getting-things-done.

What “A Great AI Sales Agent” Actually Means

Here’s the critical part of that Conversica finding that most people skip over.

The preference for AI is tied directly to trust in the AI’s accuracy. When AI fails to meet a buyer’s needs, 43.9% immediately ask for a human. The preference exists, but it is conditional on the AI actually doing the job well.

This isn’t a small caveat. This is everything.

A badly built AI sales agent — one that gives wrong answers, loops in circles, or frustrates buyers — will destroy trust and destroy your brand. A well-built one is a force multiplier.

A great AI Sales Agent:

  • Answers every enquiry instantly — at 6am, at 11pm, on public holidays, no exceptions
  • Gives accurate information every time — pricing, availability, specs, process, next steps
  • Emails on the spot — quotes, confirmations, follow-ups — the moment it says it will
  • Handles the quick and transactional — without clogging up your senior reps’ time
  • Qualifies honestly and fast — helps the buyer work out if there’s a genuine fit, without the pressure or the agenda
  • Captures and qualifies high-value leads — and nurtures them until they’re ready for a human
  • Never contradicts itself — same answer, every time, regardless of which channel or when
  • Quotes and closes simple transactional sales — end-to-end, without human involvement

That is what 60% of your buyers are asking for. Not some clunky chatbot. Not a phone tree dressed up with AI branding.

A system that actually works.

The Leads You’re Currently Losing

32% of your inbound enquiries never reach your sales team. They get stuck on hold. They send an email and wait three days. They submit a form and get an auto-reply and nothing else.

They don’t wait. They go somewhere else. The damage is invisible — you don’t see the leads you never captured — but it’s real, and it’s constant.

An AI Sales Agent doesn’t let that happen. Every enquiry gets a response. Every response is accurate. Every lead gets progressed.

That alone — just stopping the leakage — changes the revenue maths significantly.

The Opportunity

The businesses that build this right are going to have a structural advantage that’s very difficult to close.

While their competitors are on hold, they’re answering. While their competitors are emailing tomorrow, they’re quoting now. While their competitors are losing leads at 6am on a Sunday, they’re closing them.

The buyers are telling you what they want. Nearly 60% of them would rather interact with a well-built AI than wait for your sales rep to call back.

The question isn’t whether to build this. The question is whether you build it before or after your competitor does.

If you’re a business between $2M and $100M this is the most important sales conversation you can have right now. Give us a call to discuss how a well-build Due North AI Sales Agent can give you a powerful competitive advantage. Now.
